Mother of the BrideA Wedding Celebrant’s Perspective
A 5-part series that looks at some different aspects of the planning, and the professionals, that helped to make Sophie and Chris’s Wedding Ceremony a unique and memorable occasion.
Part 1 – Dressing the Bride
This Autumn I had the privilege of being the ‘Mother of the Bride’, when my eldest daughter Sophie married Chris, the man of her dreams.
As a wedding celebrant, I know how important it is for the bride and groom to have the wedding that they want. A truly bespoke, precious and memorable occasion, one that reflects who they are, and celebrates their relationship in all its aspects.
Sophie is a very strong, determined woman, her choice for the final song, “You Can’t Hurry Love’, by Phil Collins, which burst forth as the confetti was being thrown at the end of the ceremony, was an apt reminder of how long she had waited for this moment.
Both Sophie and Chris knew exactly what they wanted and how they wanted it, and the way they achieved this was by choosing and organising everything themselves, and through having a wedding celebrant.
Using a Wedding Celebrant gave Sophie the flexibility to have the venue of her choice, with the vows, music, ceremony, readings and poems she wanted without restriction.
The culmination of almost a year of planning came together and the wedding weekend was stunning. This was in part, to all the professional people who helped Sophie to have the wedding of her dreams.
The Wedding Dress
Planning began in earnest on January 1st, as we went in search of the perfect dress. We found it not too far from home at Clifton Brides, cliftonbrides.co.uk a beautiful shop at the top of Whiteladies Rd., in Bristol. It offers the very latest in bespoke bridal wear. Sophie chose an elegant gown by Lusan Mandongus and was really well looked after for all her fittings by Sarah.
A veil – hat – tiara – the choice is endless. However, we’d known right from the beginning that the headpiece was going to come from Hermione’s in Clifton Village. We’d admired her beautiful creations for quite a while, so couldn’t wait to go in to the shop to choose one. Each piece is entirely unique and created by hand in the UK design studio using the finest pearls, Swarovski crystals, gemstones and diamonds. The meticulous attention to detail and high calibre workmanship involved in the creation of every piece ensures that Hermione Harbutt accessories are treasured as heirlooms of the future.
Hermione also designed a bespoke brooch for the dress’s waistband, which beautifully reflected both the delicacy of the headpiece and the beadwork on the dress. hermioneharbutt.com
Zara, of Zara Perry Hairdressing, designed Sophie’s hair. Zara is Sophie’s regular hairdresser and has become a good friend over the years. She came to our home on the wedding morning, and, as well as doing Sophie’s hair, styled the hair of all the bridal party, intertwining Gypsophila and pearls through the bridesmaid’s tresses and giving me a sleek bob that kept its shape all day and wasn’t flattened by my hat. zphairdressing.co.uk
Shoes were probably the most difficult thing to source and match. I think Sophie bought at least half a dozen pairs, from the very expensive to some pretty cheap ones. In the end she settled for the pair that matched her dress perfectly, which, luckily for her, were also the most comfortable.
She did also buy an amazingly vivid bright red pair of flat ballerina pumps, to ensure that she could dance the night away. They just peeped through occasionally, giving us a sense of Sophie’s fun and spirit, and slightly rebellious streak!!
Having a wedding celebrant enabled Sophie and Chris to hold their wedding ceremony at a location that was special and meaningful to them.
As celebrant, I will perform your ceremony in the venue of your choice. You may have a place that is special to you, or need help in deciding and choosing. I can help and advise with that, and will contact and visit the venue.
In next weeks post, I will share with you Sophie and Chris’s choice of venue and look at the important part it played in shaping and creating their unique and wonderful wedding weekend.
